What Should Dave Winer Do on KYOURADIO?
Podcasting pioneer David Winer has been granted the honor of doing the first podcast-to-broadcast show at the new all-podcast KYOURRADIO radio in San Francisco. (I first posted about KYOURADIO here.) In a podcast this evening, Winer has asked for his listeners' views on this question: what should he do with the unlimited time he's been given for the first show?
Winer wants to use the time to commemorate an important moment. I'm not so sure it's all that important, since the point of podcasting, which is unlimited in time and geography, has never been to be translated into a broadcast, which is limited in both ways. Or is it important mostly because Winer is beating Adam Curry's Sirius podcast-to-broadcast to the airwaves?
In making the distinction between podcasts and broadcasts, I'm only paraphrasing Winer himself in his recent podcast, the one in which he asked for comments. It leads me to my one and only idea: Winer's podcast-to-broadcast show should be first distributed as a podcast, that is, made available via his RSS feed on the Internet before Monday at midnight when it's broadcast in San Francisco. Otherwise, it won't be a podcast at all. What would be the point? And if it's podcast first, Winer will be beating Curry to the punch in another way, since the Sirius "podcasts" aren't going to be made available on the Internet at all, due to copyright restrictions. (I don't really know if Winer wants to best Curry like this; it's pure conjecture on my part.)
In the meantime, I'm still skeptical about KYOURADIO because of its onerous podcaster agreement and the ads it will insert between podcasts without paying the podcasters, who are giving away their creative work for free. On the other hand, podcasters will be promoting their own shows, so there is a trade-off. Still, when I heard Winer describe in his podcast what KYOURADIO wanted him to do, I was hoping he was going to say he'd told them to take a hike.
Oh, well. It is an honor, and congratulations to Dave Winer.
UPDATE: Hey, when does Curry's Sirius show begin? The news reports say May 13. KYOURADIO begins May 16. It means that if there is to be any importance to the first KYOURADIO show, it will be because Winer decides to podcast first, then broadcast.
Confusing, I know, but maybe Winer will understand.
